Associate Director, Oncology Business Unit Strategy - Gaithersburg
At AstraZeneca, our Oncology Business Unit (OBU) is pushing the boundaries of science to redefine cancer care and deliver life-changing medicines to patients worldwide.
As an Associate Director, OBU Strategy, you will play a key role in shaping the future of AstraZeneca's oncology portfolio by supporting critical strategic and business development initiatives. Leveraging market insights, portfolio analytics, forecasting, and strategic evaluations, you will help identify growth opportunities, assess external partnering investments, and inform portfolio decisions across the business. Working closely with senior leaders and cross-functional teams, you will translate complex data into actionable insights that drive strategic direction, optimize portfolio value, and support the successful development and commercialization of innovative oncology treatments.
Key Responsibilities:
Support Business Development Opportunity Assessments: Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to evaluate external partnering opportunities by developing business cases, conducting financial valuations, performing scenario analyses, and preparing compelling presentations that inform investment decisions.
Contribute to Oncology Portfolio Strategy: Support the development of portfolio strategies across tumor areas and assets through market assessments, competitive intelligence, portfolio analytics, and strategic evaluations that shape long-term business priorities.
Deliver Strategic Insights and Analytics: Conduct robust analyses to assess market opportunities, competitive landscapes, commercial potential, and portfolio trade-offs. Transform complex data into clear, actionable recommendations for senior stakeholders.
Create Executive-Level Materials: Develop high-impact presentations, strategic briefings, and analytical reports for leadership discussions, governance committees, and portfolio review meetings.
Support Strategic Planning and Portfolio Management: Drive analytical excellence across annual planning cycles, portfolio reviews, forecasting activities, and other critical business processes by delivering accurate, insightful, and decision-oriented analyses.
Mandatory Requirements:
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree, MBA (PENDING)
Experience in management consulting, corporate strategy, commercial analytics, portfolio management, equity research, healthcare strategy, or analytical roles
Advanced MS 365 (Strong Excel & Power point skills) & Power Platform (Power Bi skill)
Exceptional analytical and problem-solving capabilities
Strong quantitative skills with experience evaluating markets, businesses, products, or portfolios
Strong communication and presentation skills, including development of executive-level materials
Soft Skills:
Highly organized with strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously
Demonstrated initiative, ownership, and a strong desire to learn
Ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional environments and influence stakeholders without formal authority
Preferred Experience
Experience at a leading consulting firm
Approximately 3 to 5 years of professional experience following completion of education
Experience in life sciences business development or forecasting
Healthcare, biopharmaceutical, oncology, medical technology, or life sciences experience is beneficial but not required
Proficiency with AI tools
The annual base pay for this position ranges from $151,080 - $226,622 USD Annual. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Our positions offer eligibility for various incentives, an opportunity to receive short-term incentive bonuses, equity-based awards for salaried roles and commissions for sales roles. Benefits offered include qualified retirement programs, paid time off (i.e., vacation, holiday, and leaves), as well as health, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms of the applicable plans.
Additional details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base pay (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
