The Position
At Boehringer Ingelheim, we are committed to transforming the lives of patients suffering from severe pulmonary diseases. We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Scientist to join our Vascular Health Cluster within Innovation & Research (I&R).
This position focuses on understanding the role of the pulmonary vasculature in chronic lung diseases, particularly pulmonary fibrosis (PF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While epithelial injury has long been considered a key driver of disease progression, growing evidence highlights the pulmonary endothelium as a critical regulator of vascular remodeling, inflammation, tissue homeostasis, and fibrosis. Aberrant endothelial responses contribute to vascular dysfunction, increased permeability, altered angiogenesis, and pathological tissue remodeling.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will drive the development of innovative in vivo models and advanced imaging approaches to investigate vascular remodeling and identify new opportunities for therapeutic intervention and drug triaging

Tasks & responsibilities
One of your key responsibilities will be to establish, characterize and validate novel in vivo models of pulmonary vascular pathologies, including aberrant angiogenesis, pathological vascular sprouting and endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndoMT).
You will investigate vascular remodeling in pulmonary fibrosis and COPD and define robust, disease-relevant endpoints for mechanistic and pharmacological studies.
In regard to quantitative vascular assessment, you will develop readouts for aberrant angiogenesis, vascular thickening, pulmonary vascular volume and structural changes within the pulmonary vasculature.
Moreover, you will apply and further develop high-resolution micro-computed tomography (µCT) of isolated lungs and image-based quantification pipelines for vascular analysis.
In addition, you will identify and evaluate tissue-based and circulating biomarkers associated with pulmonary vascular pathology and translate preclinical findings into novel therapeutic concepts.
Furthermore, you will collaborate with internal and external experts, present your findings at scientific meetings and contribute to mentoring students and junior scientists where appropriate.
Requirements
PhD in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacology, Veterinary Medicine, Imaging Sciences or a related discipline.
FELASA-B certification or an equivalent qualification that enables independent work with laboratory animals, together with hands-on experience in animal models.
Experience with µCT imaging and/or advanced image analysis methods; experience with computational imaging or independent programming will be an advantage.
Solid knowledge of molecular and cellular biology techniques, including flow cytometry (FACS), Western blotting, ELISA, PCR/qPCR, and protein and RNA analysis.
Knowledge of pulmonary diseases, particularly pulmonary fibrosis and/or COPD; expertise in vascular biology, endothelial cell biology, angiogenesis or fibrosis research will be an advantage.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with fluency in written and spoken English; German language skills will be a strong advantage.
