The Position
Job Description: Automation Engineering Intern – Tomato Pipeline
Department: Roche Pharma Product Development China (PDD ADS)
Location: Shanghai, China (On-site)
Duration: 3 Months
About the Project
The "Tomato" automation platform is a cutting-edge, multi-engine translation and AI-assisted review pipeline designed to drastically reduce the time and resource costs of regulatory eSub package translations for China’s health authority. By replacing legacy systems and fully in-sourcing the workflow, the platform aims to cut translation and review cycles from 6 weeks down to 1 week.
As an intern on this team, you will focus on resolving key remaining technical bottlenecks, bridging multiple translation engines, and optimizing the final delivery formats to ensure strict eCTD compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Unified Translation CLI: Develop a central, user-friendly command-line interface (CLI) to unify two existing Python script suites. This will allow users to seamlessly route requests to either the Rosetrans or Deeptrans engine APIs without needing to locate or manage separate scripts.
DRG Translation Workflow & Middle-Step Engineering: Revolutionize the Data Review Guide (DRG) translation process by migrating away from traditional AI-to-Word document workflows.
eCTD PDF Compliance Automation: Ensure the automated DRG PDF generator strictly adheres to health authority guidelines, enforcing programmatically.
Define.xml Generator Integration: Eliminate the need for users to manually switch to P21 for XML generation by integrating an existing define.xml R package generator directly into the automated Tomato workflow. You will test the tool's compatibility with Chinese translation documents, fork and optimize the R package to align with current specifications, and embed it into the platform's Docker image on the Apollo compute platform.
Dataset Translation Modernization: Lead the initiative to replace legacy "ocean tools" dependencies for dataset translations, integrating them directly into the modernized pipeline.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Education: Currently enrolled in or recently graduated (within 12 months) from a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD program in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or Engineering.
Programming Expertise: Strong proficiency in Python or R, with a distinct preference for candidates experienced in Python package development.
DevOps & Infrastructure: Essential knowledge of Git (branching, merging, conflict resolution) and experience with Docker image building and deployment.
Automation: Familiarity with enabling automated workflows via webhooks or chatbots (e.g., GChat space).
Communication: Proficient in English for reading complex technical specifications, regulatory requirements, and writing clear project documentation.

How we calculate "similar"
No black box, no LLM guesswork: a deterministic score built from four normalized attributes. Here's this role's own peer group at different match levels, so you can see the mechanism, not just the result.
Every comparison starts from the same 100-point budget: 25 for working in the same function, 40 for the same therapeutic area, 20 for the same or adjacent seniority, 15 for the same country. A dimension we can't confirm on both sides contributes nothing, never a guess, never a free pass.
0 points, never a partial guess. A role we know almost nothing about beyond its function bottoms out at 25%; it never inflates to 100% just because there's little to compare against. Seniority uses a defined ladder (Associate → Manager → Associate Director → Senior → Principal → Director → Senior Director → Executive/VP) so "Director" and "Senior Director" count as adjacent, but "Director" and "Executive/VP" do not.
