Senior Scientist (all genders) Recombinase Optimization, Wuppertal
You want to combine scientific excellence with hands-on bench work and actively shape the optimization of site-specific recombinases for eukaryotic systems? In this role, you co-lead a cross-division project between Crop Science Plant Biotech and Pharma R&D Genomic Medicine and build high-performing assay and screening platforms to enable recombinase optimization. YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Co-lead and support the optimization of site-specific recombinases for use in eukaryotic systems as part of a joint project between Crop Science Plant Biotech and Pharma R&D Genomic Medicine
Collaborate closely with Plant Biotech colleagues to advance recombinase applications across multiple biotechnology areas
Develop, implement, and run mammalian cell-based high-throughput assays and screening cascades for recombinase activity
Design and execute optimization and protein engineering strategies to improve site-specific recombinases
Perform molecular biology work related to protein engineering (e.g., library cloning and NGS-based analysis)
Execute established high-throughput assays for recombinase activity in bacterial systems
Potentially design and perform in-vitro biochemical/biophysical assays to characterize recombinase activity
Evaluate data, prepare reports/presentations, and support cross-functional alignment and go/no-go decisions
WHO YOU ARE
PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, or a related field, with a strong passion for hands-on lab work
Strong first-hand experience and deep understanding of modern genome editing methods; Previous industry experience is a plus
Direct experience with site-specific recombinases is a plus
Solid experience with state-of-the-art mammalian cell culture, ideally in high-throughput screening cascades
Familiarity with protein engineering (e.g., structure–activity relationships, library generation methods, modern AI/ML-based methods)
Familiarity with modern NGS workflows and Python-based NGS analysis tools
Excellent teamwork and communication skills, high learning agility, strong self-organization, and willingness to take project responsibility
Fluent in English, written and spoken, with strong communication and presentation skills

We ensure your financial stability with a competitive salary between 86.075€ and 93.800€ per year (full-time) plus a variable component. Your compensation is based on your qualifications, skills, and professional experience.
