The Ophthalmology Field Director, Medical Science Liaisons (FD) is a leadership role within US Medical Affairs and a strategic partner across Biogen. This role provides leadership, strategic direction, and operational excellence to a regional team of Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs), ensuring the effective translation and execution of medical strategy in support of meaningful patient outcomes. What You’ll Do

Strategic Planning & Execution

Collaborate with Medical Directors, brand teams, clinical partners, and cross‑functional stakeholders to develop and implement regional field medical strategies, translating enterprise and brand objectives into clear, actionable plans for the MSL team.

Establish and monitor KPIs that measure MSL impact and execution against medical and brand strategy, leveraging both leading and lagging indicators to drive continuous improvement.

Maintain a deep understanding of the therapeutic area, Biogen products, competitive landscape, and evolving regulatory and treatment guidelines to inform field strategy and execution.

Demonstrate agility in prioritizing and reprioritizing field activities in response to scientific, regulatory, or market changes.

Performance Management & Coaching

Lead a clear and consistent operating rhythm, including weekly review of field metrics and KPI dashboards, to inform performance management and targeted, data‑driven coaching.

Actively manage, coach, and develop MSLs through regular territory coaching and bi‑annual territory reviews in partnership with Medical Leadership, fostering high performance and professional growth.

Ensure MSLs have complete clarity on medical strategy, aligned engagement plans, and consistent execution against defined KPIs and expectations.

Be accountable for team performance while fostering a positive, inclusive, and high‑engagement culture aligned with Biogen values.

Medical Insights & Field Excellence

Ensure high‑quality, strategically aligned Voice of KOL (VoKOL) insights are gathered compliantly and meet defined quality standards.

Oversee effective use of field tools and systems (e.g., Veeva, OLA) and ensure HCP targeting and activity documentation align with medical strategy and compliance requirements.

Drive field modernization by ensuring adoption of approved tools, processes, and best practices that enhance efficiency, insight quality, and scientific impact.

Ensure timely and effective communication of medical insights to relevant internal stakeholders to inform cross‑functional strategy and tactical planning.

Collaboration, Communication & Executive Presence

Serve as the primary regional field medical liaison, enabling strong, compliant collaboration across Medical, MDO, and cross‑functional partners in support of a One Biogen, patient‑centric approach to external engagement.

Clearly articulate the value proposition of the medical strategy to internal leadership and stakeholders, demonstrating strong business acumen and executive presence.

Lead, educate, and mentor internal stakeholders on therapeutic area insights, strategic trade‑offs, and the impact of medical decisions on enterprise goals.

Maintain and contribute to cross‑therapeutic‑area best practice and lessons‑learned sharing to continuously elevate field medical excellence.

Who You Are

You are a self-starter, energetic leader, coach and manager of a team of professionals. You have clinical training with work experience in the healthcare, pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology industry. You keep patients, payers and health care providers top of mind in your daily work and collaborate to solve critical scientific and business challenges.

Required skills

7+ years of Medical Affairs experience, including MSL experience (required) and Medical strategy experience (highly preferred)

Advanced scientific or clinical degree required; doctoral level preferred (e.g. MD, PhD, PharmD, DNP).

Demonstrated leadership and management of effective Medical Affairs teams

Excellent communication and formal presentation skills, organizational skills, and ability to effectively manage several projects simultaneously

Able to travel 60% of the time, including ability to travel overnight and occasionally on weekends

Must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record with authorization and ability to drive a company leased vehicle or rental

Preferred Skills & Therapeutic Area Specific Skills

Clinical experience and subject matter expertise in the ophthalmology therapeutic area

2+ years’ experience managing a team of field -based Pharmaceutical/Biotechnology industry employees

Experience navigating an ultra-competitive disease state

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $222,000.00-$305,000.00

Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.

Regular employees are eligible to receive both short term and long-term incentives, including cash bonus and equity incentive opportunities, designed to reward recent achievements and recognize your future potential based on individual, business unit and company performance.
