Biostatisticians design clinical trials so they can answer their scientific question, write statistical analysis plans, analyze the resulting data, and support regulatory submissions and publications. Increasingly they also work on real-world evidence and on more complex designs such as adaptive and Bayesian trials.

A master's degree in biostatistics or statistics is the usual entry point, with a PhD more common for senior and strategy roles. Programming in SAS or R is expected, and familiarity with CDISC standards helps.
