The Position

The Senior FinOps Engineer is a strategic leader and innovator who champions the adoption of cloud financial management and AI-driven cost optimization trends to meet digital product needs. In this role, you will evaluate and integrate emerging FinOps tools and methodologies to optimize the software delivery process and enhance the digital product lifecycle.

As we build our AI Factory, you will be pivotal in defining and applying models that ensure the rationalization of costs without reducing innovation. You will act as a technical mentor to junior, mid-level, and senior engineers, significantly shaping the organization's technical direction and financial sustainability.

Description of the area

Hosting and Infrastructure (HI) provides mission critical on-premise infrastructure, cloud hosting, connectivity, and technology products that enable all functions at every Roche site to develop / innovate, connect and deliver compliant digital products across the Roche Enterprise.

The HI Business Operations Team is the strategic engine driving operational excellence and financial integrity across HI’s technical ecosystem. This team ensures that infrastructure is not just powerful, but also efficient, transparent, and aligned with the area’s strategic objectives.

The team's mission is to bridge the gap between technical execution and business value, with a focus on operational excellence and financial optimization, transforming raw infrastructure data into actionable business intelligence while streamlining the workflows that keep the departments moving forward.

Job Responsibilities

Scope / Content Leadership: Evaluates and integrates new FinOps tools and methodologies (e.g., Cloudability, Apptio) to enhance the digital product lifecycle and ensure cost-effective utilization of public cloud services.

AI FinOps Innovation: Leads the definition and implementation of governance models specifically for the AI Consumption, ensuring high-performance AI workloads are balanced with rigorous cost rationalization and innovation preservation.

Accountability / Problem Solving: Drives medium to large (M/L) initiatives across products to identify gaps in Cloud Financial Models and brings in external best practices to improve enterprise-wide FinOps practices.

Financial Governance: Actively manages governance activities including invoicing, monthly accruals, forecasting future consumption, and the implementation of Cloud saving plans across AWS, Azure, and GCP.

Stakeholder Management: Excels in negotiations and partnerships with vendors and internal customers to achieve mutual benefits and provide clear direction for long-term financial objectives.

Impact/Strategy: Provides global-level support for technological initiatives, giving speeches and actively sharing knowledge at international events and driving internal Centers of Excellence (CoEs).

Technical Excellence: Designs and enforces high standards for cloud financial reporting systems and automated cost monitoring for large-scale production environments.

Consultancy / Mentoring: Acts as a highly respected FinOps consultant to stakeholders with different backgrounds like engineers, IT managers or finance partners. Mentors FinOps team colleagues to excel on the definition and implementation of FinOps practices.

Qualifications

Education / Experience

Extensive Experience: Managing large workloads and products across traditional and cloud application architectures (Serverless, Kubernetes, AI/ML Infrastructure).

Financial Proficiency: Proven track record in cloud finance control, including experience with IT infrastructure, budgeting, and cost-efficiency strategies.

Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading strategic initiatives and coaching engineers and finance colleagues in a growth-enabling way.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Finance, or equivalent work experience.

Technical Skills

Cloud Ecosystems: Advanced knowledge of multiple cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and their respective pricing models.

Data Analytics: Proficiency in data analysis to analyze large-scale usage datasets, build custom financial/cost models, and generate actionable insights for cloud cost optimization.

Cloud Financial Management Tools: Expert-level knowledge of Cloud Cost Analysis tools (e.g., Cloudability) and ServiceNow CMDB for data quality and financial control.

Infrastructure as Code: expertise in Terraform, CDK, CloudFormation, or similar to automate financial governance and monitoring.

Additional Qualifications

Thought Leadership: Capable of representing the organization at global events regarding FinOps and AI cost management.

Communication: Strong oral and written communication skills in English; additional languages (Spanish, German) are a plus.

Certification: One or more industry certifications in public cloud or FinOps (e.g., FinOps Certified Practitioner) is highly desired.
