Purpose: The Director, Global Portfolio Strategy & New Business Development reports to the Senior Director, Global Portfolio & New Business Development. This role sits at the center of Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine’s global portfolio agenda, helping shape how the enterprise prioritizes, governs, and communicates its portfolio strategy across therapeutic areas, regions, and key functions. The Director will partner closely with senior leaders across the Global Commercial Strategy Organization and the broader Innovative Medicine leadership team to drive strategic portfolio planning, resource prioritization, performance tracking, launch and lifecycle visibility, and enterprise governance for high-priority initiatives. The role will also support development of clear executive narratives for internal and external stakeholders, including strategic plan, Enterprise Business Review, investor-facing, and leadership communications. This leader will bring structure, insight, and operational discipline to complex, cross-functional work, translating portfolio priorities into actionable plans, senior-leader alignment, and measurable business impact.
Key Responsibilities
Lead global portfolio strategy and operations initiatives that strengthen Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine’s ability to prioritize investments, advance the pipeline, and deliver sustainable growth.
Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Group Operating Committee (GOC) and the Global Commercial Strategy Organization Senior Leadership Team, including governance, priority setting, decision support, and follow-through.
Design, structure, and lead high-priority, cross-functional strategic initiatives across J&J Innovative Medicine, including the Innovative Medicine Strategic Plan and selected GOC accelerators.
Partner with R&D, Finance, Therapeutic Areas, Regions, and other enterprise functions to inform pipeline investment strategy, portfolio prioritization, and resource allocation.
Establish integrated visibility into portfolio performance, pipeline progression, launches, and lifecycle priorities, translating insights into clear implications and recommended actions for senior leaders.
Develop fact-based perspectives on strategic portfolio topics through primary and secondary research, quantitative analysis, and cross-functional input.
Define objectives, milestones, performance indicators, and governance mechanisms for priority initiatives, ensuring accountability, execution, and measurable business impact.
Build stakeholder engagement strategies that align senior leaders around critical decisions and translate strategic priorities into pragmatic implementation plans.
Develop clear, compelling executive narratives for internal and external audiences, including the Strategic Plan, Enterprise Business Review, quarterly earnings and senior leadership communications.
Serve as a trusted strategic partner to senior leaders and governing bodies across J&J Innovative Medicine, bringing an enterprise perspective, constructively challenging assumptions, and advancing innovative approaches to priority issues.
Lead multiple complex initiatives simultaneously, applying strong judgment, structured problem solving, and disciplined project leadership in a highly matrixed global environment.
Support selected new business development activities, including commercial due diligence, market and opportunity assessments, financial modeling, and evaluation of emerging science and external innovation opportunities.
Qualifications / Requirements:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree preferred, such as MBA, MPH, PharmD, PhD, or other relevant graduate degree is preferred.
Required:
7+ years of experience in strategy consulting, corporate strategy, portfolio strategy, business development, or a related strategic leadership role.
Experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or life sciences industry, preferably within commercial strategy, marketing, portfolio strategy or business development
Demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives from strategy development through execution and business impact.
Strong problem-solving, analytical, and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable recommendations.
Proven ability to serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders and influence decision-making in a highly matrixed global organization.
Experience partnering across commercial, R&D, finance, and other enterprise functions to drive alignment and strategic outcomes.
Excellent communication and storytelling skills, including development of executive-level presentations, strategic narratives, and leadership communications.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, operate effectively in ambiguity, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
Proven track record of collaboration, innovation, and leadership within diverse global teams.
Preferred:
Experience supporting portfolio governance, investment prioritization, strategic planning, or enterprise decision-making processes.
Experience working with pharmaceutical pipelines, launches, lifecycle management, or therapeutic area strategy.
Strong understanding of key trends shaping the pharmaceutical sector, including innovation, market access, competitive dynamics, and evolving customer and healthcare system needs.
Experience preparing materials or strategic narratives for executive committees, senior leadership teams, board-level discussions, investor-facing communications, or enterprise business reviews.
Therapeutic area experience in oncology, immunology, neuroscience, cardiovascular/metabolism, or other innovative medicine areas preferred.

This position is located in Raritan, NJ and may require up to 10% domestic travel and international travel, as needed

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :
$150,000.00 - $258,750.00
Additional Description for Pay Transparency:
Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).
This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program.
Subject to the terms of their respective policies and date of hire, employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:
Vacation –120 hours per calendar year
Sick time - 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Colorado –48 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington –56 hours per calendar year
Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays –13 days per calendar year
Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
Parental Leave – 480 hours within one year of the birth/adoption/foster care of a child
Bereavement Leave – 240 hours for an immediate family member: 40 hours for an extended family member per calendar year
