Backup & Recovery Architect (C ommvault )
Role Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Backup & Recovery Architect to join our org at our Bangalore office . In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for the end-to-end design, implementation, and governance of enterprise-wide data protection strategies. The ideal candidate brings deep architect-level expertise in Commvault, strong hands-on knowledge of Cohesity, and working familiarity with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM). You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the resilience, integrity, and recoverability of critical business data across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
Key Responsibilities
Commvault Architecture & Operations
Design, architect, and continuously evolve the enterprise Commvault backup and recovery infrastructure.
Define and enforce backup policies, retention schedules, SLAs, and DR runbooks aligned with business requirements.
Lead complex Commvault migrations, upgrades, and integration projects across on-premises and cloud platforms.
Perform capacity planning, performance tuning, and root-cause analysis for backup failures and incidents.
Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation including architecture diagrams, runbooks, and SOPs.
Serve as the internal subject matter expert (SME) and escalation point for all Commvault-related issues.
Cohesity Platform
Architect and manage Cohesity Data Protect and Data Management solutions for workload protection and data consolidation.
Integrate Cohesity with existing data center and cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP) for seamless data mobility.
Implement Cohesity-based ransomware detection, immutable snapshots, and rapid recovery capabilities.
Collaborate with security teams to ensure compliance with data residency and encryption standards.
IBM TSM / Spectrum Protect
Support, administer, and optimize existing IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM / Spectrum Protect) environments.
Assist in TSM-to-Commvault or TSM-to-Cohesity migration projects where applicable.
Maintain TSM server policies, storage pools, and schedules in line with enterprise standards.
Strategy & Governance
Define and drive the long-term data protection roadmap aligned with enterprise IT strategy.
Evaluate and recommend new technologies, vendors, and solutions to enhance backup and recovery capabilities.
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., GDPR, GxP, SOX) related to data protection.
Participate in audit activities and provide evidence for backup and recovery controls.
Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and operations staff.
Required Qualifications
Experience
10+ years of experience in enterprise backup and recovery architecture.
Architect-level proficiency in Commvault Complete Data Protection, including CommCell design, IntelliSnap, VSA, cloud-connect, and multi-site configurations.
Hands on experience with Cohesity platforms (DataProtect, SmartFiles, DataManagement).
Demonstrated experience in designing DR strategies for complex hybrid environments (physical, virtual, cloud, SaaS).
Technical Skills
Deep expertise in Commvault: CommCell Console, Command Center, REST APIs, deduplication, replication, and disaster recovery workflows.
Strong knowledge of Cohesity: cluster management, policies, RBAC, cloud archival, and integration with hypervisors and cloud providers.
Solid understanding of IBM TSM / Spectrum Protect: server setup, client configuration, storage pools, and policy management.
Familiarity with storage technologies: SAN, NAS, object storage, tape libraries.
Experience with virtualization platforms: VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V.
Working knowledge of cloud backup services: AWS Backup, Azure Backup, or equivalent.
Scripting skills (PowerShell, Python, or Bash) for automation of backup operations are a plus.
Understanding of networking concepts relevant to backup traffic: VLAN, firewall rules, bandwidth throttling.
Preferred Qualifications
Commvault Certified Professional (CCPA) or equivalent Commvault certification.
Cohesity Certified Sales / SE Professional (CCSP) or similar Cohesity certification.
ITIL Foundation certification or higher.
Experience working in regulated industries (pharmaceutical, life sciences, finance).
Familiarity with GxP validation processes .
Experience with data classification and information lifecycle management (ILM).
Knowledge of ransomware defense strategies and immutable backup architectures.
Soft Skills & Competencies
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues under pressure.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
Collaborative team player with the ability to work across geographically distributed teams.
High sense of ownership, accountability, and initiative.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced enterprise environment.
Willingness to participate in on-call rotations and support critical incident resolution.
