About this opportunity
Marine Engineer
Location: Kalundborg, Denmark
Contract: Permanent
Are you energised by solving technical problems and finding their root cause rather than simply treating the symptoms? Do you enjoy working close to production, understanding how equipment behaves and identifying ways to make it more reliable? Would you like to work across a highly varied manufacturing environment where your technical curiosity can make a tangible difference?
We are looking for a Marine Engineer to join M1 Maintenance Development in Kalundborg. Whether you are newly qualified or bring significant experience from maintenance, mechanical engineering or production support, this is an opportunity to develop your technical expertise while helping us take our maintenance organisation to the next level.
The position
As a Marine Engineer in M1 Maintenance Development, you will provide technical support across both our production and maintenance organisations, helping to ensure that critical manufacturing equipment operates safely, reliably and effectively.
Our ambition is to move increasingly from reactive firefighting towards proactive and predictive maintenance. Rather than repeatedly correcting the same equipment failure or simply adding additional maintenance activities, we want to understand why problems occur, eliminate their root causes and develop sustainable technical solutions.
You will work close to the shop floor across a highly varied production environment encompassing equipment and processes such as pumps, valves, pipes, centrifuges, columns, storage tanks, freeze dryers, hydraulics, pneumatics, mixing, utilities, fermentation and purification.
This is not a traditional hands-on maintenance position. Your role will be to understand and diagnose technical problems, bring together the right expertise and help drive issues through to effective and lasting solutions.
Your main responsibilities will include:
Providing technical support to Production and Maintenance across M1 and supporting the reliable operation of process equipment.
Investigating equipment failures and contributing to or driving systematic problem solving and root cause investigations.
Developing corrective and preventive technical solutions that address underlying causes rather than simply treating symptoms.
Coordinating the appropriate maintenance, production and technical specialists to resolve equipment issues effectively.
Reviewing recurring equipment problems and challenging existing maintenance strategies where a more effective solution can be identified.
Supporting the development of preventive and predictive maintenance approaches and helping move the organisation away from reactive maintenance.
Using equipment information, reliability data and trends to identify risks and opportunities to improve equipment performance.
Contributing to maintenance strategies that improve reliability, maintainability and overall equipment effectiveness.
Supporting technical improvement initiatives and local investment projects involving equipment modifications, upgrades or replacement.
Collaborating with project teams to ensure new equipment and technical solutions can be effectively maintained once transferred into operation.
Working closely with Production, Maintenance, Engineering, QA, project organisations, automation specialists, suppliers and external vendors.
Sharing technical knowledge across the team and contributing to a collaborative environment where technical problems are solved together.
For one of our four appointments, experience working with centrifuges would be particularly valuable, as we are looking to strengthen and retain this specialist capability within the team.
Qualifications
To succeed in this position, we imagine that you have:
A relevant technical educational background, such as Marine Engineer (Maskinmester), Mechanical Engineer or another relevant technical qualification combined with strong mechanical experience.
A good understanding of mechanical equipment and an interest in developing deep technical expertise within production machinery and process equipment.
Knowledge of equipment such as pumps, valves, centrifuges, piping, hydraulics, pneumatics or other rotating and mechanical process equipment.
A natural interest in solving technical problems and understanding why equipment behaves or fails in a particular way.
The ability to approach technical problems systematically and contribute to robust root cause investigations and sustainable solutions.
Strong communication and stakeholder management capabilities, enabling you to work effectively across Production, Maintenance and other technical functions.
Danish language skills enabling you to communicate effectively with operators and other Danish-speaking stakeholders, together with good English skills.
We are deliberately open regarding seniority. You could be a newly qualified Marine Engineer looking to begin your technical career, or you may already have considerable experience within maintenance, mechanical engineering, reliability or production support.
Previous experience within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food, beverage or another process manufacturing environment would be advantageous but is not essential. Experience within GMP production, SAP, data analysis, predictive maintenance or technical improvement projects would also be beneficial rather than mandatory.
More important than having followed one career path is your technical curiosity and problem solving mindset. When an equipment problem repeatedly occurs, your instinct is to understand why it is happening and how it can be prevented rather than simply accepting another temporary fix.
As a person, you are collaborative while also being comfortable taking individual responsibility. You communicate openly, build relationships based on respect and trust and enjoy sharing technical challenges with colleagues to find the best solution together.
You are also comfortable constructively challenging existing approaches. We value people who are transparent, willing to express their perspective and able to challenge colleagues and their manager respectfully when they believe there is a better way forward.
About the department
You will join M1 Maintenance Development in Kalundborg, supporting an API manufacturing environment producing key ingredients for some of Novo Nordisk's major products.
The wider maintenance organisation includes skilled mechanical specialists, electricians, calibration professionals and utility support, while Maintenance Development provides the technical and reliability expertise that helps connect maintenance activities with the needs of production.
Our team supports equipment and processes across the factory, giving you exposure to an unusually broad technical environment spanning mixing, utilities, fermentation, centrifugation, storage, purification and freeze drying.
We are currently strengthening the team with four new colleagues as we increase our capability and further develop the way maintenance is managed across the factory.
Today, a significant amount of effort can be spent responding to immediate technical issues. Our ambition is to build an increasingly mature maintenance organisation that can identify where intervention is genuinely needed, use equipment knowledge and data more effectively and prevent failures before they impact production.
We also want to build a genuinely collaborative team. You will have responsibility for your own technical areas while being encouraged to share problems, expertise and ideas with colleagues. Our ambition is to create an environment built around trust, respect and teamwork, where people enjoy coming to work and gain energy from solving meaningful technical challenges together.
