About this opportunity

The Role

Reporting to the Executive Director of Digital Operations and Strategic Portfolio Management, the Director, CMC Digital Operations and Strategic Portfolio Management will own and drive a defined portfolio of strategic digital initiatives across Moderna’s CMC Digital organization and TPM for cross-CMC initiatives. This role sits at the intersection of digital strategy, CMC innovation, and enterprise execution, translating business priorities into clear portfolio plans, operating rhythms, decision frameworks, and measurable outcomes. The Director will partner closely with Digital, CMC, Finance, Operations, and external partners to enable predictable delivery, manage cross-functional dependencies and risks, and ensure digital investments are sequenced, resourced, governed, and communicated effectively. This role requires a strong operator and influential leader who can connect strategy to execution, build trust with senior stakeholders, and drive operational excellence across complex, high-impact programs.

Here's What You’ll Do

Own and define the operational delivery of a defined CMC Digital portfolio, translating Digital and CMC priorities into clear 1–2 year outcomes, OKRs, roadmaps, and execution plans.

Lead planning and governance rhythms across the portfolio, including prioritization, dependency and risk reviews, steering forums, decision records, and executive-ready portfolio updates.

Partner with Digital, CMC, TPM, Finance, Operations, and external partners to ensure initiatives are defined, sequenced, resourced, measured, and aligned to business value.

Drive predictable delivery across cross-CMC digital initiatives by identifying systemic blockers, escalating issues with clear options, and ensuring durable follow-through.

Co-lead the design and continuous improvement of the portfolio operating model, including intake, prioritization, capacity planning, value tracking, documentation, and runbook standards.

Build and maintain executive-facing dashboards and portfolio narratives that connect strategy, risk, investment, delivery health, and business impact.

Act as a strategic liaison between Digital and senior CMC stakeholders, translating complex technical roadmaps and program interdependencies into clear value stories and decision points.

Lead cross-functional working groups and stakeholder engagement mechanisms that promote alignment, transparency, accountability, and best-practice sharing across teams.

Drive resource and capacity planning across internal teams and external partners; manage multi-vendor delivery models and optimize for cost, quality, speed, and risk.

Partner with Finance and Operations to track budgets, support investment trade-off discussions, and ensure portfolio delivery aligns with Moderna’s enterprise goals.

Embed security, privacy, compliance, and audit-ready practices into portfolio execution, partnering with appropriate teams to manage risk and evidence requirements.

Use data-driven KPIs and outcome metrics to monitor portfolio performance, identify improvement opportunities, and steer operational decisions.

Communicate clearly during change, incidents, and portfolio shifts, helping stakeholders understand priorities, trade-offs, risks, and expected outcomes.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications)

BA/BS degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, Life Sciences, Engineering, or a related field.

12+ years of experience in digital operations, IT, technical program management, portfolio management, or digital strategy execution, preferably in a regulated life sciences or pharmaceutical environment.

Demonstrated experience owning complex, cross-functional digital programs or portfolios with multiple workstreams, distributed teams, senior stakeholders, and external partners.

Strong understanding of portfolio governance, prioritization, OKRs/KPIs, dependency management, risk management, executive reporting, and delivery operating rhythms.

Experience translating business strategy and value streams into actionable digital roadmaps, execution plans, and measurable outcomes.

Strong financial and operational management skills, including budgeting, cost tracking, capacity planning, and investment trade-off support.

Excellent communication and influence skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical and operational topics for senior leaders and cross-functional audiences.

Working knowledge of Agile practices, product operating models, software delivery lifecycle, and modern digital delivery methods.

Knowledge of digital transformation challenges and opportunities within pharmaceutical CMC, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, or related regulated environments.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

Advanced degree (MA/MS/MBA) in Information Technology, Business Administration, Life Sciences, Engineering, or a related field.

Fluency with product operating models, value-stream planning, software delivery lifecycle, and digital portfolio management practices.

Experience building or improving portfolio operating models, governance mechanisms, executive dashboards, decision records, and delivery runbooks.

Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to use data, metrics, and business context to guide prioritization and investment decisions.

Proven ability to lead change management, stakeholder alignment, and adoption efforts in a fast-moving, matrixed environment.

Experience with data platforms, lab automation, AI/ML-enabled capabilities, manufacturing systems, or CMC digital transformation initiatives.

How we calculate "similar"

No black box, no LLM guesswork: a deterministic score built from four normalized attributes. Here's this role's own peer group at different match levels, so you can see the mechanism, not just the result.

Every comparison starts from the same 100-point budget: 25 for working in the same function, 40 for the same therapeutic area, 20 for the same or adjacent seniority, 15 for the same country. A dimension we can't confirm on both sides contributes nothing, never a guess, never a free pass.

Unmatched or unknown dimensions score exactly the same: 0 points, never a partial guess. A role we know almost nothing about beyond its function bottoms out at 25%; it never inflates to 100% just because there's little to compare against. Seniority uses a defined ladder (Associate → Manager → Associate Director → Senior → Principal → Director → Senior Director → Executive/VP) so "Director" and "Senior Director" count as adjacent, but "Director" and "Executive/VP" do not.
