Organization and Position Overview

Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact.

The Calibration & Instrumentation Supervisor is a key leader responsible for overseeing all calibration and instrumentation activities to ensure the company’s assets are managed in compliance with cGMP and other applicable standards. This role ensures equipment availability, reliability, and optimal performance by calibrating and maintaining process, facility, and utility equipment according to established guidelines. The Calibration & Instrumentation Supervisor leads and develops a team of instrument technicians by fostering a culture of safety, technical expertise, and innovation. In addition, this role ensures alignment of maintenance programs and initiatives with organizational goals for safety, quality, and efficiency, directly supporting the delivery of novel medicines for clinical trials within The Medicine Foundry. This position will be responsible for developing initial processes and requirements for the instrumentation team in preparation for operation.

Responsibilities

In line with the job outlined above, the following are typically the key tasks that would be expected of the role:

Safety – Champions a proactive safety culture within the calibration and instrumentation team, ensuring technicians are trained on and compliant with safety procedures and policies, and. Leads investigation of accidents and near misses, driving corrective actions to prevent recurrence, and maintains a clean, organized work environment.

Quality – Ensures the team's work consistently meets cGMP, Global Quality Standards, and site-specific quality requirements, maintaining data integrity and audit readiness across all calibration records.

Manage People Effectively – Leads the day-to-day performance of the calibration and instrumentation team, including scheduling, overtime, and resource planning, while coaching technicians and owning performance management and development planning. Schedule is primarily Monday–Friday, with flexibility for night shift and weekend support based on production needs.

Calibration & Instrumentation Excellence – Owns execution quality for the site's calibration program, ensuring work is performed on schedule and to specification.

Serves as the primary point of contact for calibration and instrumentation issues; leads escalation and resolution of critical equipment or measurement failures.

Ensures all metrology equipment maintains traceability to national/international standards (NIST) and is audit-ready at all times.

Directs team training and qualification, ensuring technicians are current on required training before being assigned work.

Owns calibration program KPIs, using data to drive continuous improvement in team performance and equipment reliability.

Aligns team priorities with production schedules and equipment availability, using risk-based prioritization when calibration and production needs compete.

Partners with production, quality, and engineering stakeholders to ensure calibration activities are effectively planned and prioritized across the site.

Monitors execution processes to ensure work is performed in conformance with site procedures, corporate policy, and cGMP requirements.

Reviews a representative sample of completed work orders for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.

Owns incident reporting, root-cause investigation, and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) implementation for calibration and instrumentation issues. Assists in calibration and metrology topics during internal and external audits. Builds and staffs the calibration and instrumentation team, assist in recruitment, interviewing, and hiring decisions to ensure the team has the technical depth to support a 24/7 GMP operation.

Basic Requirements:

High School Diploma

5+ years of industrial calibration and instrumentation experience in a leadership or supervisory role

Experience in regulated industry required (FDA preferred; strong candidates from other regulated or industrial environments will be considered).

Strong understanding of calibration and electrical systems, including the following: Instrumentation (pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical)

Measurement traceability back to a national/international standard (NIST)

Electrical test equipment (flukes, signal generators, oscilloscopes, etc.)

Electrical troubleshooting (24 VDC to 120 VAC)

Working knowledge of cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practices)

Additional Preferences:

Familiarity with FDA 21 CFR Parts 210/211 and Part 11 (electronic records/signatures)

Experience with audit support (FDA, internal, third party)

Experience writing/reviewing SOPs, calibration procedures, and work instructions

Deviation/CAPA investigation experience

Change control experience

Root cause analysis / troubleshooting methodology

Ability to manage contractor/vendor calibration services

Demonstrated ability to read and understand engineering and P&ID drawings

CMMS experience (IBM Maximo or similar)

Other Information:

Temporary location in Carmel, Indiana.

Permanent location starting in 2027 at the new Lilly Medicine Foundry in Lebanon, Indiana.

Position leads a team of 8 instrument technicians and 2 lead instrument technicians.

Position supports a 24/7 operation and is expected to be flexible in maintaining availability for support in decision making and issue resolution as necessary to operate the facility.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$40.38 - $59.23
